Box 10529 Greensboro, NC 27404-0529 Re: Juvenile Tobacco Sales Violations Dear Mr. Milstein REGIONAL OFFICFS: 84 HARLOW ST., 2ND FLGOR BANG(1R, MAINE 04401 TEL:(207) 941-3070 FAx:(207) 941-3075 44 OAK STREET, 4TH FLOOR PORTLAND, MAINE 04101-3014 TEL: (207) 822-0260 FAx: (207) 822-0259 TDD: (877) 428-8800 The Maine Bureau of Health has forwarded your letber of July 12, 2000 to me. Pursuant to your request for information, please find enclosed a list of all Maine retailers with tobacco violations since January 1, 1997. We are pleased that you share our concerns about underage access to tobacco and welcome your efforts to sanction retailers who fail to comply with Maine law. Of special concern to this office are retailers with repeat violations and chains with poor records of non-compliance (e.g. C.N. Brown Company d/b/a Big Apple Stores). The vast majority of Maine retailets is responsible, has the best compliance record in the nation and deserves credit In order that we may evaluate the success of limiting promotions, please provide us with a list of retailers where you intend to linut promotions. We will make note of these and check on their compliance during regularly scheduled compliance checks. Thank you for your efforts to limit youth access to tobacco producls; if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me. ohri Archard, Coordinator J uvenile Tobacco Control ENCLOSURES cc: Christopher Leighton, AAG, Chief, Health and Human Services Division Sarah Haggerty, Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine, DHS ~.
