Renort of the Smoke and TechnoloQV Groun_Meetin
at the CORESTA Congress
Yokohama, Japan
November, 1996
The CORESTA Congress was held in Yokohama, Japan from the 3' to the 8' of
November, 1996, at the kind invitation of Japan Tobacco, Inc. The Congress was jointly
organized by Japan Tobacco Inc., Hasegawa Co. Ltd., Toyotama Per£umery Co. Ltd.,
Japan Filter Technology, Ltd., Daicel Chemical Industries, Ltd., Fuji Flavor Co. Ltd.,
Takasago International Corporation. Mitsubishi Rayon Co. Ltd., and Soda Aromatic Co.
Ltd.
The Congress program, a list of Smoke and Technology papers, and a list of participants
are presented in Appendices I-III. The Smoke and Technology-papers which were
presented at the Congress have been bound into a separate volume which is available on
request to either Group Secretary.
Opening Remarks by the Group Presidents
The first session was a joint meeting of the Smoke and Technology Groups. Dr. Hollweg
and Mr. Boder opened the session and welcomed the participants. They expressed sincere
thanks to Japan Tobacco, the other sponsors, and the Organizing Committee for hosting
the Congress in Yohohama.l5r. Hollweg and Mr. Boder then opened the first session.

Sub Group Routine Analytical Chemistry
As its title says this Sub Group deals with all aspects of routine analytical chemistry.
Quite a load of different tasks is given to the group by the Scientific Commission. The
Sub Group published five CORESTA Recommended Methods during the last two years.
These are:
CORESTA Recommended Method
- No. 35: Determination of total alcaloids (as nicotine) in tobacco by continuous
flow analysis
- No. 36: Determination of nitrate in tobacco by continuous flow analysis
- No. 37: Determination of reducing substances in tobacco by continuous flow
analvsis
-No. 38: Determination ofreducing carbohydrates in tobacco by continuous flow
analvsis
- and No. 39: Determination of the purity of nicotine and nicotine salts by gravimetric -
analysis - Tungstosilicic Acid Method
At the time being the remaining tasks of the Sub Group are:
the development of a CORESTA Recommended Method for the determination of
humectants on tobacco
the clarification of technical details of the smoking methods, which has been done and
was accepted by both the Scientific Commission and the Board. The result of this
will be discussed with ISO.
~ the yearly collaborative check of the CORESTA monitor and an additional paper on
how to use this CORESTA monitor together with some statistical considerations. As
has been reported these tasks are well on the way

One recently revised Recommended Method has been proposed and accepted. This is the
revision of CORESTA Recommended Method no. 2 on the determination of
organochlorine residues on tobacco. - It was a complete revision of the method published
in 1974. The method has been passed to ISO and the Sub Group is now considering the
comments made there. The Sub Group is on the way of preparing revised methods on
MH-30, EBDC's and organophosphorus pesticides. The Sub Group works under the
guidance and in strong collaboration with the Agricultural Chemical Advisory Committee
which reports directly to the Scientific Commission and this relationship was recently
strengthened by electing the Sub Group's convenor to ACAC.
Sub Group on Ci¢ars
The Sub Group objectives are: --
1. To investigate the technical problems associated witb the mechanical smoking of
cigars
2. To develop-a method for the mechanical smoking of cigars that provides a credible
and useful comparison of the smoke chemistry of cigars of all shapes and sizes
3. To prepare and publish a practical method for sampling and mechanical smoking of
cigars which meets the second term of reference.
-Two main points of investigation must be mentioned. One is the question of holders
which must be capable to operate for cigars of all shapes and sizes and the second one is
connected to CORESTA Recommended Method no. 21 which describes the atmosphere
for conditioning and testing of tobacco and tobacco products. It may well be that an
amendment for cigars is necessary.
Task Force Metals in Tobacco and Smoke
This Task Force deals with the collation of all scientific papers concerning metals in
tobacco and smoke in a data bank. It is now available in form of a CD-rom for all
CORESTA members on request to the coordinator R. Cox of Philip Morris, US. This
CD-rom needs the same pre-programming procedure as the CORESTA data bank.

Report Of the Smoke Group President, November, 1996
Dr. Jnrgen Hollweg
Two years ago, during the congress in Harare, I reported on a lot of changes in our Study
Group. At that time many discussions had taken place on the direction and type of
activities of the scientific work and how the workload should be structured within Sub
Groups and Task Forces. The last two years since then have been dominated not by
changes but have been two years of consolidation. This does not mean that studies have
been carried out more reluctantly. The record number of six new CORESTA
Recommended Methods has been published out of Smoke Study Group within this
period.
What I mean by consolidation, e.g., is the discussion on the Study Group's name and its
objective. Though_"Smoke Study Group" does not completely comprise all activities and
fields of interest. it was felt not to change it in the absence of a better designation.
However, the objectives of our Study Group are defined more clearly now:
The Smoke Study Group is concerned with the scientific study of all chemical aspects in
the following fields:
- agronomical chemicals used in crop production and their residues on tobacco
- determination, characterization and chemistry of tobacco components
- studies of casing and flavor materials including sensory aspects
- chemical studies of all other materials used in cigarettes, cigarsand roll-your-own
products
- determination, characterization and formation of tobacco smoke components
- environmental tobacco smoke studies-
The vivid interest in scientific studies in these fields is shown in the high number of
papers for this congress which again have shown the good standard of scientific quality in
CORESTA. In between the Congresses the Smoke Study Group had a joined meeting
together with the Technology Group in Vienna/Austria on the kind invitation of Austria
Tabak. During this meeting papers have been presented on the topics of:
- analytical chemistry
- environmental tobacco smoke
- environmental issues

Future Meetings
The next Joint Meeting of the Smoke and Technology Groups will be held in I-lamburg,
Germany from the 7"` to the 111e of September, 1997 at the kind invitation of Reemtsma.
The 1998 CORESTA Congress will be held in Brighton, U.K. from the 11 t° to the 15s' of
October, 1998 at the kind invitation of British American Tobacco.
