On July 6, 1994K the Sobcotamitteo sent each member of the CIAR science advisoty board a survey on the health effects of enviroamental tobacco smoke (ET5). The survey asked the members of the seience advisory board whether they agreed tbat EM is a human lung caroinogen, a seriotu and substantial public health threat to children, and a raupa of cardiovascutar disease and death. The survey also asked the tnetnbets whettter they agreed with specific risk estimates quantifying the numbei of ddaths and zi9tesaes esused by axposura to B1S, A copy of che suivey is exhibit 3. The Survey Results. Seven of the nine members of the seience advisoty board responded to the survey. A substantial consettsus emerged on two points: (1) suc of the seven members agt+eed ehat ET5 "prt'settts a serious and subsrantial public health threat to c7n7dren," and (2) five of the seven members agreed that E'I'$ ia "a human lung carcinogec."~'13ese answers coarradict the tobacco industy's assertion that E'F5 is not a health thoeat to nonsmokess.
