TAR, NICOTINE, CO AND C09 DELIVERIES OF
ITALIAN CIGARETTES
R. D. Quincy, W. H. Griest and A. H. Marshall
Introduction. This Topical Report presents the results of the analyses of
13 brands of Italian cigarette variants for tar (also TPM and water), nico-
'tine, CO and COz at the request of the NCI.
Experimentai. This set of Italian cigarettes was sent to ORNL by NCI. Each
brand, consisting of 200 cigarettes, was individually selected, smoked and
analyzed for these constituents by standard protocol procedures. Nicotine
was determined by the protocol gas chromatographic procedure.
ResultsJDiscussion. This is the first set of Italian comnercial cigarettes
that has been analyzed in our smoke facility. The Alfa and Esportazione two
nonfilter brands were partially void of tobacco in a number of the cigarettes.
However, the mean weight and resistance-to-draw of the respective selected
rods smoked for the analyses were full and firm. The results for all var-
iants are given in Tables 1 and 2.
The Gala Doppio Filtro brand advertises on the package, "the average
contents of smoke for each cigarette is 0.0006 gram nicotine and 0.0130 gram
other components". At ORNL the average nicotine delivery per cigarette found
was 0.44 mg with a corresponding tar delivery of 15.6 mg. The difference may
be batch-to-batch variances, the small number of selected cigarettes analyzed
here and/or in the butt length of the smoked cigarette. [All filter cigarettes
were smoked to a butt length 3 mm before the filter (overwrap) connects to
the tobacco rod, and nonfilter cigarettes were smoked to a 23 mm butt length.]
Many of the Italian cigarettes listed (in Table 2) appear to deliver nicotine
and tar values in the range found in the smokes of a number of American (brand)
cigarettes. It has been reported that the Italian Tobacco Monopoly's pricing
policy and improved quality of domestic brands recently has encouraged smokers
to switch from imported to domestic brands and the trend toward increased con-
sumption of domestically produced brands is expected to continue.1
