TAR, NICOTINE, CO and CO;, DELIVERIES OF PHILIPPINE CIGARETTES R. B. Quincy, W. H. Griest, A. H. Marshall Introduction. This Topical Report presents the results of the analysis of 13 filter brands of Philippine cigarette variants for tar (also TPM and water), nicotine, CO, and C0; at the request of the NCI. Experimental. This set of Philippine cigarettes was sent to ORNL by NCI and was individually selected, smoked, and analyzed for these constituents by stan- dard protocol procedures. Nicotine was determined by the protocol gas chrom- atographic procedure, Results/Discussion. This is the third set of Philippine cigarettes that has been analyzed in our smoke facility. Unlike the other sets of cigarettes, this one contains four 120 mm brands. Except for the Saratoga, all the 120 mm brands submitted are °'brown`° packs. There seems to be a trend on the part of some Philippine manufacturers to manufacture "brown° packs or(cigarette paper).I Also, the Elite menthol 100 mm and the Insular Cigarlet are "brown'° type cig- arettes. The More menthol and the Saratoga menthol--the two American 120 mm brands analyzed--are manufactured locally (there) along with all the other domestic Philippine brands listed in Tables 1 and 22. Although the More menthol 120 mm is an air-dilution-type cigarette, its nicotine and tar delivery, found in the smoke particulates, are in the same concentration range as that of the other analyzed brands. The American manu- factured More menthol 120 mm delivers an average of 21 mg tar and 1.55 mg of nicotine per cigarette, and the American made Saratoga menthol 120 mm delivers an average of 16.2 mg tar and 1.01 mg of nicotine, respectively.3 These re- sults indicate that there is approximately 50 percent less nicotine and tar delivered in the smokes of these two American brands as compared to their Philippine counterparts.
