TAR, NICOTINE, CO AND C02
DELIVERIES OF PHILIPPINE CIGARETTES

Introduction. This Topical Report communicates the results of the analysis
of 12 brands of Philippine cigarette brands for tar (also TPM and water),
nicotine, CO, and C02 at the request of NCI.
Experimental. The cigarettes were provided to ORNL by NCI and were handled,
smoked, and analyzed by standard protocol procedures. Nicotine was measured
by the protocol gas chromatographic procedure.
Results/Discussion. Table 1 identifies the brands and the weights, RTDs, and
puff numbers of the cigarettes. Analytical results are presented in Table 2.
In general, the tar and nicotine deliveries of these cigarettes are consis-
tent with those for other Philippine cigarettes we have examined (1). We
have analyzed a"Seven Stars° brand previously (2) with a group of Japanese
cigarettes. The Japanese equivalent had about the same cigarette weight,
higher RTD, and lower puff n=ber. Tar was about 15.5 mg/cig and nicotine
was 1.05 mg/cig. The Japanese brand produces about half the tar delivery
of the Philippine brand, and the nicotine is about 50 percent lower. Con-
siderable changes appear to have been made in this cigarette brand since
our last analysis. None of the other cigarette brands have been examined at
ORNL in the past.
