INTRODUCTION
In September 1977, NLM added the 1976 edition of the data retrieval file known as the Registry of
Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) to its family of online services. RTECS is structured
around
individual chemical records of substances with toxic action: The original collection of data that
makes up
the Registry of Toxic Ef;ects of Chemical Substances was known as the Toxic Substances List,
compiled
in 1971 by the National Institute tor Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in response to the
Occupational
Safety and Health Act of 1970. The hard copy version of RTECS is updated annually with quarterly
microfiche editions available. The current ONLINE version is based on the 1979 printed edition plus
quarterly
updates. It contains toxicity data for approximately 53,000 substances (4/82).
RTECS is a single source document for basic toxicity Information. RTECS includes toxicity data from
a variety of printed sources, threshold lirtiit values, aquatic toxicity ratings, air standards, NCI
carcinogenic
bioassay information, toxicological/carcinogenic review information, compound classification, and
NIOSH
Criterion Document availabilty. It is especially useful for retrieving information on a group of
compounds
or identifying a group of substances on the basis of a selected effect or criterion. Online RTECS
gives the
user the flexibility of interactive searching and retrieval which can allow focus on subsets of data
and data
tailored to specific needs.
The telephone number for questions on the system, communication problems, program interpretation,
etc., is (301) 496-6193 or (800) 638-8480 (toll free). The telephone number for technical assistance
in
RTECS search strategy, etc., is (301) 496-1131.
