Subcommittee's letter of March 21.
The Subcommi'tteeRs letters of January 25'and March 21
focused''on particular brands'of cigarettes appearing in movies.
The Subcommittee wishes tc, Y;~_oadeni its inquiry to consider the
payment or providing of valuable props to have general smoking
scenes in movies or tel'evision programs even, if the scene does
not identify a particular brand'of cigarette. Accordingly,
please supply the following information by May 27, 1989:('1) Please list each film or television,
program made since
January 1, 1979 and showni in the United States (Iwhether made in
the United Statez or in a foreign country)for which R. J..
Reynolds Tobacco Company ("RJR")i (or any of its foreign
subsidiaries)i directly or indirectly (for example, through the
Tobacco Institute) paid money or supplied props (such as
biillboards) in ord2r to have a smoking scene appear in the film
or television prograv; this requests incSudes, but is not limited
to, having a perfo-n+.er or host on a television program smoke
during,' the program.
(2) For each ~Aam or program listed in (1)1, please indicate :
(al) the sum of money paid by RJR, (b) if props were supplied',
describe them a'nd'pzovide an estimate of their fair market value,,
(c) the company producing the film, or program, (d) the name,,
address andi tteiephor:e nusaber of' the employee of the producer of
the film or prograr., with whom, RJR principally negotiated
concerning the smoking scene, (e) whether the script of the film
or program was altered to include a smoking scene, (f) whether
