August 7th, 1990 Dear Sir, With great interest I studied the review draft on environmental tobacco studie: a guide to workplace smoking policies. On page 17 you summarized the nealth effects of SfS in asthmatics and concluded that the data are too limited to drawn final conclusions. 3ased on the controversial literature we decided to study the acut effect of passive cigarette smoking on airway tone and airway responsiveness in asthmatic children and adult asthmatics. Enclosed you will find a copy of our manuscript which is in the reviewing procedure for -Pediatric Puimonology' (revised manuscript was submitted to the Editorial Boarc). 3ur data on adult asthmatic are given in an abstract. :he full length ma- nuscript is in preparation. From these data you can see, that we were unable to document an adverse effect of acute passive smoking on lung function and/or airway responsive- ness, thouga the subjects felt discomiortable. We feel that this observation is important also from a clinical standpoint of view, because discomfort during passive smoking is often falsely in- terpretated as an asthmatic attack.
