. Region IX John Jamison Wigwam Resort Litchfield Park, AZ Field Staff Contact: Notifiedof request. Jamison contacted TI about customer complaints that the dining room~doesn't have smoking and nonsmoking sections. There have been~no complaints about smoke. Jamison doesn't want to establish separate areas but wants to publicize special ventilation to~accommodate smoking and nonsmoking patrons. We met with Jlamiso.^. and presented him with a policy to help promote his ventilation system. He's promised to, send us feedback. We will follow up. Penelope r!iedaner Executive Director Southern Arizona Restaurant Association Tucson, AZ Field Staff Contact: Notified of request for tent cards and will pursue the voluntary program with Miedaner. Miedaner requested~a trial batch of 500 tent cards as a result of the NRA memorandum. She has reported limited use of the tent cards. SARA still makes the cards available but also distributes association-diesigned cards that say °Thank-you for not smoking." Miedaner said the Tuscon Chamber of Commerce disaDOroved of the cards. SARA does not want to pursue the program. Miscellaneous Colette Coleman National Restaurant Association Washington, DC Field Staff Contact: None required as yet. We met with Coleman to discuss how tolpromote the voluntary policy. As a result, Coleman sent a memorandum to all state restaurant association executives announcing the availability of the "Smokers are welcome here" tent cards. Any requests will come directly to:us. Coleman also agreedto refer to us any state association or restaurant contacting NRA about a smoking problem. As a result of the NRA mailing, page 50

r It s0 requests have come from several states. Incidentally, we collaborated with Coleman to set up meeting between our member companies in Japan and an executive withthe Japan Food Service Chain Association and president of KFC-Japan Limited. Coleman has asked us to submit arewrite of their restaurant brochure entitled "No-Smoking!Sections - A Restaurateur's Guide for Establishing A No-Smoking Section." The NRA offers this publication to members requesting,information/ad'vice on restaurant smoking. We will submit our rewrite by April 17. Richard Crawford National Restaurant Association Washington, D.C. Field Staff Contact: None required as yet. Crawford provided us with information concerning,a study commissioned by Red Lobster in Florida in an attempt to avert Florida proposal which would have requiredl restaurants to physically separate smokers and nonsmokers. The study found that the cost of compliance per the approximately 60 Red Lobster units would be $47,00'0. Crawford is investigating other chai'ns that may have similiar reports. we will meet with him in early spring to discuss a joint TI-NRA economic impact study, along with other surveys of restaurateur/patron preferences. Completed Contacts Region VI Patrick Gafney Hamburger Hamlet Restaurant Washington, DC Field Staff Contact: None required. page 51
