Armstrong serves as chairman of the corporation's Loss
Management Committee and was charged with developing, a
policy recommendation concerning smoking in the
workplace. We providedhim with the workplace kit and
will follow up if necessary.
In a follow-up phonce call, Armstrong said the TI
materials very helpful and in addition~to information
gathered froma number of health organizations, were
used to write the company's "*_?:r,--tly voluntary policy."
Saskoil's policy prohibits moking in public areas,
allows smoking in private offices, andallows employees
to determine ind:livdual smoking/nonsmoking sections in
open office areas.
Armstrong said issue is not completely resolved and
requestedadditional information. To~no avail, he has
contactedCTMC. We will continue to follow up.

associations and restaurants with which we have been in
contact concerning restaurant policies.

Bill Langkopp
Louisiana Hotel/Motel Association
New Orleans, LA
Field Staff Contact: Notified of request and will assist
with follow up.
Via TI lobbyist Jo Guidry, we met with executive vice
president Langkopp to discuss implementing the program
in hotel/motel restaurants. Langkopp affirmed his
association's willingness to accept the programsubjiect
to minor revision of some of the materials. we sent
Langkopp samples of program materials for his board
members.
We learned from Langkopp that his association
formally approved the program 4/7. Implementation is
underway.

our restaurant program. we have prepared artwork

Dennis Dyer has promised us a written proposal as to how
the associations want to:proceed, along with cost
estimates. We have seen nothing since he mentioned that
proposal in January.
Region II
Fred Sampson
New York State Restaurant Association

Field Staff Contact: Field staff initiated' the request
for materials concerning the voluntary program.
Sampson requested~information concerning our voluntary
program. Subsequently field~staff has determined that
Sampson does not want to pursue the program at this
time. Sampson views implementation of the program as
"giving in." Sampson~has indicated that he may want to
pursue the programin~ the future.

Field Staff Contact: Coordinated contact and follow up
with field~staff and state lobbyist.
We met with Kelly on 10/11/8'5 to discuss our restaurant
program and compliance with the New Jersey law requiring
posting of signs indicating whether restaurant have
nonsmo}ting,areas or provide adequate ventilation in lieu
of a designated area. We drafted language for the
restaurant signs that was approved by the association
board.
Kelly requested 11,000 fair policy brochures, 1,500 fair
policy posters and~20, 000' tenit cards that have been
produced. NJRA, on association letterhead, has
distributed information explaining the program and
samples, to all restaurants in the state. They have
already requested additional materials to meet demand.
One restaurant has requested 500 tent cards.
We will receive monthly reports on distribution of
resources.

Field Staff Contact: Field staff initiated the contact
and has agreed to follow up. We have had no reports.
Program brochure has been mailed to approximately 19,000
Pennsylvania restaurants. Storey and field staff are
promoting the program to regional associations. Storey
has deemed the program very successful. He noted that
one restaurant requested 2,000 tent cards and he
anticipated having to order additional materials.
We have received none of the monthly reports promised
us; we have received only one telephone report since the
mailing was done.
Region V
Hank Crawford
Hank Crawford Public Relations

Field Staff Contact: Initiated contact and requested
that program materials be mailed to Crawford', who is our
legislative counsel in Oregon~. Field staff is preparingg
for a meeting with~association officials who are
interested'in the voluntary program.
Crawford also represen~ts the Restaurants of Oregon
Association~. At field~staff request, we provided
Crawford with table tent samples, model policy and
program resources.
The associationhas determined~that use of materials
would draw undesired attentionto a situationmany
Oregon restaurateurs prefer to handle privately.
John F. Gordon
Restaurant Association of the State of Washington
Seattle, WA
Field Staff Contact: Field staff coordinated' request,
which was made as a result of the NRA mailing,.
Gordon has requested 6,,000' tent cards. Field staff is
pursuing,program approval and implementation with:
Gordon.
Gordon reported a mediocre response to the tent cards
however he is interested in receiving more information
about materials, offering to publicize their
availability in his newsletter. Field staff will follow
up.

Field Staff Contact: Field~staff notified of request
for tent cards. Field staff discussed program
implementation with association executives and
determined that the association would only offer tent
cards to members. The determination was made that
members are not experiencing any problems concerning the
restaurant smoking issue.
Caputo requested~1,0100 tent cards as a result of the NRA
memorandum. Materials were mailed 08/21/8S.
Irene Beardwood, evp of the association, reported a very
positive response to the tent cards and expressed new
interest in receiving more information about the other
materials. We will follow up.
Region VII
Trudy D'Alconzo
Florida Restaurant Association
North Miami, FL
Fie1d Staff Contact: Staff notified of request and'is
scheduling a meeting with the association.
D'Alconzo, executive secretary of the association,
requested 4,000 table tent cards imprinted withtheir
association logo. The materials were distributed at th~e
09/30/85 association regional meeting.
Th~e association has also endorsed the brochure: "An
Employer's Guide to the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act"
which includes guidelines on establishing restaurant
smoking and nonsmoking areas. We assisted the Florida
Chamber in preparing this brochure.
Lois Kostroski, executive director of FRA and president
of ISRAE, reported a "decent response" to the tent
cards, andexpressed interest in meeting with us to
discuss the programin its entirety. We will follow up.

Susan Wolfe is no longer with the LRA. The association
requested 8,000 tent cards as a result of the NRA
memorandum and expressed interest in pursuing, the
voluntary program.
Via TI lobbyist Joe Guidry, we met with executive vice
president Jlim,Funk, to discuss the program. Funk agreed
to implement the programiprovided some of the program
materials are revised and asked us to collaborate with
Loyola, the new communications director, on designing
"Fair policy" brochures andposters. We also explored
the possibility of TI providing an educational seminar
and writing an article for the LRA's bi-monthly
magazine.
We are following up withiLoyola. Use of tent cards
still undetermined.
Region VIII
Valerie Bricken
Arby's Roast Beef Restaurants
Tulsa, OK
Field Staff Contact: Notifiedof request.
Bricken, an employee at Arby's, requested information
concerning, the availability of "NO,SMOKING"' tent cards.
We provided her with sample table tents and informedher
that the materials are provided free of charge.
THe over 70,Arby's in this area have designated smoking
andnonsmoking sections. Bricken is awaiting approval
from her supervisor to order the table tents.
Oliver Kensey
Steer Inn Family Restaurants
Cushing, OK
Field Staff Contact: Staff notified of request.
Kensey requested100 table tent cards. Kensey learned
of the materials through th~e Oklahoma Restaurant
Association newsletter.
Kensey, whose restaurants have designated smoking and
nonsmoking sections, says the cards were very positively
received. He will order more as need arises.
