Dear Pelayo:
~ Thank you for your letter of August 21, 1984, regarding the proposal on
passive smoking. I understand that the proposal must be submitted by
October 15, 1984 and that the information you need from me at this point is
(1) an expression of willingness to participate, and (2) a short description of
the population to be included, estimated number of cases, facilities available,
and a budget. Per our telephone conversation this week, I do wish to
participate with you and the other investigators in the collaborative project
proposed and am enclosing a written summary regarding the above. After we
spoke I reviewed the Harris County lung cancer incidence data for 1976 to
1980 and population characteristics. Based on this review and our findings
from the earlier lung cancer study in females, I estimate approximately 200-250
incident cases of lung cancer annually among female residents of Harris County
in 1986 and 1987 and that 9% or 18-22 of them will be nonsmokers. These
calculations suggest a total of 36-44 eligible incident cases from our area,
~ rather than the 9 per year (18 total). We will undoubtedly lose cases for the
interview study due to underascertainment, inability to locate, refusals, etc.
and' these losses should~ be considered from all areas in estimating the required
sample size of study subjects with completed interviews. Perhaps we need to
include cases for a third year.
The information you requested is enclosed. Please do not hesitate to
write or call if you need anything else.
With very best regards.
incerely,
Patricia A. Buffter; P
