C OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY OPERA?EDBV UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION NUCLEAR DIVISIDN ~ POST OFFICE BOX X OAK RI'DGE, TENNESSEE 37830 May 30, 1979' Dr. Gary L. Huber Chief, Division of Respiratory Diseases Beth Israel Hospital 330 Brookline Ave. Boston, MA 02215 Dear Dr. Huber: 1.G f V"C~' ~ .~ ,; JN N ! -!v. -f' Thiis is to confirm our conversation,of last week concerning a bioassay monitoring site visiit to the NCI pigeon inhalation study at the Charlesgate facility. As I think I mentioned'on the phone, one of the probllems which we've encountered in more carefuli'y defining the pigeon bioassay is the time required, to~obtaiin.sufficient smoke samplies. In addition, we ourselves have felt that it would be worthwhile to have a third'.pair of eyes and hands around, at least part of the time, to help out, observe, etc. Thus, I plan to accompany Mr. Bob Gill and'lMr. Brad Quincy for two of the three days of their stay. We'1l_ pl'an to arrive at the CharTesgate facility around 8:30 a.m., Wed'nesday, June 6th. Dur- ing the day, we'll focus on obtaining samples during, the actual! animali expo- sures. As was the case on our last visit, we'll need tolobtaiinismoke samples from the machine after the end of the normal' exposure day. On Wednesday and' Thursday night, we''d'li'lke to be able to work into the evening 8:30 p.m.). I plain to head back to Oak Ridge Thursday night, while Bobland Brad finish up the ainimal sampling orL~Friday. I would expect that they'll be out of your hair by Friday, June 8, at 4 p.m. As has beenithe case on our previlous viisits, we woulidlike to bring back ti 100 cigarettes of each:of the two codes being used. If there's any problem with June 6-8, pl'ease 1!et me know. I'm sorry about the tiight scheduling, but in order to juggle vacati'ons, other meetings and proposal comrnitments, it was eiither now or midl-Jully. On another matter, I tal ked to, Tom, N7 ghti.ngal e of ECD after our diiscussi'on concerning the nici accomodationicigarettes. As it turns out, there are some differences between some of our results and Lorillard's, the cigarttes' ~ ~ U C - ~ Cri

Thus, we are presently re-generating and' analyzingi trhe smokes of some of the codes on which we exhibited the greatest discrepancies. I hope to have the new results by the time I get to Boston.
