MEMORANDUM TO: Joyce Brintoni FROM: Gary Huber RE: Pathology Space DATE: July 11, 1979 We received today your memorandum of June 27, 1979, indicating the need to move out of rooms L-152 and L,155 in the Beth Israel Hospital. I appre- ciate what you are saying, but youido not indicate "to where" we are to move. We could close down, indeed, our tobacco-industry related activities (and reduce the costs accordingly of activities related to this space onithe industry program), until such time as the industry-related effort can be continued elsewhere., We cannot, however, stop the pigeon-related research (funded by NCI/ECI),ias our activities and personnel (whichlare extensive in this area) must go forward on a day-to-day basis. We have no alternative space to conduct these activities and meet our obligations to the NCI/ECI contract administered.through the Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Davies, who is in charge of the pigeon-related morphology/pathology component of this program, and I, as the Principal Investigator on the contract, are in concurrence that the faci~lities in~the Kirstein Annex, which we still have, and the facilities at Charlesgate West are not acceptable for these purposes. As originally anticipated, it had been our intent to move the morphology/ pathology sectiionito the Mount Auburn Hospital, with the assumption that facilities there:would be available in time. From my conversation with Walter Allen, it now appears it will be 4-6 weeks-or more before laboratory renovations at the Mount Auburn will be completed for us. I do not know what to consider as a solution. If youisuggest we find an alternate interim location, we should identify such a si,te:as soonlas possible and request the additional supplemental funding from NCI to support a "double move". I really am reluctant to do that. It would seem to me that the Beth Israel Hospital, in signing in this award as the grantee-institutilon, must share some responsibility in regard to their initial-assurances to the grantor that adequate facilities would be available for completilonlof the researchiprotocol outlined. I would hope, therefore, that the proposed July 27, 1979 evacuation date can be extended to provide a responsible transition of both our industry-sponsored and Federally-sponsored activities.
