It has been a hard 2 1/2 years and I deserve better. Therefore and whereas, I will be gone from September 1-10 and hope- fully will be totally non-available. I will take no work with me, I will spend no grant or industry monies, and I promise not to even think about work. I am not even telling anyone where I am going, but in general they speak French, sometimes wear no clothes, the food is excellent, and there should, in the absence of hurricanes, be plenty of sunshine. Above all, there are no telephones (the last time I tried to go away the General Counsel from R.J. Reynolds reached me within one-half hour of landing in Greece and checking into my room! Therefore and whereas, for the first 10 days of September I have but one message to each and alil---to those who work with me, to the tobacco industry and my many friends therein, to NIH and to my many friends as well as not so much friends therein, to colleagues and foe alike, to family and loved'ones, and to you, my friend---I say (perhaps better expressed in the vernacular of that special friend~and immortal, GeneraL Counsel who lives in a comfortable New York suburb), I say to one and all: Therefore and whereas, FUCK OFF!
