C ~. Harvard Medical School = Mount Auburn Hospital DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE GARY L. I-IUBER, M.D., DIRECTOR Smoking and Health Research Program H.rrvard Medcal School at Mount Auburn lYoJpital Mount Auburn Hospital 330111ount Auburn Street ' Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 617-661-1158 December 19, 1979 Dean Henry Meadow Harvard Medical School 25 Shattuck Street Boston, MA 02115 Dear Dean Meadow, V Thank you for your brief note of November 28, 1979. I appreciate your comment in regard to my introductory paragraph of the termination~ letters, which was based'on the various communications generated over the negotiation period with the industry and was carefully reviewe&with our counsel prior to our sending it out. We have attempted to be accurate in this, as well as in other communications. Unfortunately, the differences in understanding we may all come away with may never adequately be resolved,.-- which reflects some of our limitations in communication. From my standpoint, both personally and professionally, I would like to minimize any conflicts in interpretation, and towards that end I will make an appointment to discuss this at greater length with you in person. The "commitment in principle" by the industry through June 30, 1980 was defined clearly in Mr. Shinn's letter to us. It will be honored, I ami confident, to the degree that we in turn honor the guidelines provided and the intent of the phase-out objectives, as so identified. I would appreciate your assistance toward that goal, when needed, and will do my best to hold up our end. Thanks again for the brief note. I anticipate no major problems that cannot be resolved for the remaining two quarters. Joyce Brinton has been overall most helpfuli, and shouLdibe commended for her effort. I am personalily very grateful, as it has greatly freed up my time to write most productively over the past six months. I want to express my appreciation to you, also, for the help that you have given over what is a difficult time and a complicated task. Thank you. Sincerely, Gary L. Huber, M.D., Director Smoking and Health Research Program GLH:mtc
