Harvard Medical School - Mount Auburn Hospital DEPt1RTMENT OF MEDICINE GARY L. HUBER, M.D., DIRECTOR Smoking and'Hea/th Research Program Harvard Medacal School at' Mount Auburn Hospital Mr. Lee Stanford Shook, Hardy, and Bacon Mercantile Bank Tower 1101 Walnut Kansas Ckity, MI 64106 Dear Lee, Mount Auburn Hospital - 330 Mount Auburn Street Cambridge; Massachusetts 02138 617-661-1158 January 9, 1980 As I had told you_in a past conversation, our marijuana inhalation research program was interrupted when the agents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts showed up one day at the Charlesgate facility and seized our research cigarettes. My license_ to use marijuana was ¢onfined to the Beth Israel Hospital and Charlesgate West. The day we moved to the Mount Auburn Hospital', the Beth Israel apparently relinquished this responsibility without warning to us, although my appointment still remains at that insti- tution. We were able, with~a lot of support andihelip from Pat:rick.Hunt, to complete the studies, but not without some considerable stress and discomfort. The final resolution is reflected in the attached communication from the Director of the Division of Food and Drugs in the Department of Public Health for Massachusetts. Let it be said, then, that the long and at time dreadful experience of Charlesgate West had its final curtain call in a substantial puff of marijuana smoke: Sincerely, Gary L. Huber, M.D., Director Smoking and Health Research Program GLH/kkh
