FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY,, MARCH 26, 1980 $6 MILLION GRANTED FOR SMOKING-HEALTH STUDIES New York -- More than $6,000,000 for studies on smok- ing and health were granted by the Council for Tobacco Research-U.S.A., Inc., last year, it was announced today.` Twelve new projects were funded as were more than 45 renewals of projects previously approved. Among the new studies are research into lung,cancer in Connecticut from 1935 to the present, genetic susceptibility to bladder cancer, and the biochemical basis of predispo- sition to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Other studies funded by the Council were for various aspects of cancer, heart disease and respiratory ailments. The Council has provided more than $58,000,000 for research on smoking and health since its formation in 1954. More than 700 original grants and contracts have been awarded to 398 independent scientists in 250 medical schools, hospitals and research institutions. The investigators alone are responsible for disclos- ing their findings in recognized journals or at medical and scientific meetings. They have so far published 1772 research papers on work supported by the Council. Council grants are awarded following recommendations by a Scientific Advisory Board currently consisting,of eight members. -0- (Attached is a list of the scientists who received the new grants, their institutions and their project titles.)
