MARGARETiD.LINEBERRV, STEPHEN R:ECKLEY DAVID ,R..HARDY 1917-1976 Re: Harvard Project Equipment Gentlemen: I've had recent conversations with John"Darsie, General Counsel of the University of Kentucky, and I believe the disposition of the Harvard equipment is ready for decision. Mr. Darsie has stated that if the equipment (including the portion still in Boston) is given to the University, the items which Dr. Huber would like to use for his research would be made available to him at the Medical School. This has the approval of Dr. John Thompson, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, who has stated that necessary laboratory space is available at the Medical School. The Tobacco and Health Research Institute ("THRI") would choose from the remainder the equipment. Iltems not selected for the Medical School or THRI would be distributed elsewhere in the University. Mr. Darsie has stated that he and Dr. Thompson can work out the details of transferring equipment to the Medical School for Dr. Huber's use. Under the circumstances, I believe this is a good result and'I recommend that the grantors give the equipment to the University of Kentucky. I have told Dr. Huber that the grantors should not become involved in negotiations regarding use of the equipment within the University and'that these details can best be worked out between Dr. Thompson and Mr. Darsie. >

If the recommendation is approved by the grantor companies, I wil!1 proceed with Mr. Darsie to effect transfer of title to the equipment to the University of Kentucky. For your information, Dr. Huber has been invited to make a presentation to the joint meeting,of the American Lung Association and the American Thoracilc Society which will take place in Kansas City in May, 1983.
