A paper will be delivered by Dr. Huber or one of his staff at a meeting in Las Vegas of the American College of Chest Physicians which commences in late October. A manuscript will,be submitted for publication, prob- ably to Chest, within the next several months. I have not re- ceived copies of either the paper or manuscript and do not expect to receive them until they are available generally. Dr. Huber will follow the usual channels in advising the scientific com- munity of his findings, which he described to me as preliminary and primarily methodological. He has discussed the findings reportedin the abstract with other scientists and will have further discussion at an informal workshop in Bethesda on September 26 and 27. „ ... U.~'7k18,~ ~r5 Publicity, perhaps a considerable amount, would not be surprising. Dr. Huber, in fact, is preparing a statement for release to the media. I understand that he will describe the importance of the work and followup investigations which are planned. This will probably be given to'the press at the Las Vegas meeting but it is always possible that it would be released

Dr. Huber is most appreciative of the industry's support and I believe that comment by the industry, if comment appears necessary, should stress the industry's commitment to independent scientific re- search over many years. Some short, draft suggestions are en- closed'for your review. A response (perhaps by the Tobacco Institute) may be in order at some time in the future. Dr. Huber has recommended that the next site visit be in March and I have asked him for proposed dates. Dr. Huber is considering a symposium to cover a number of smoking, and health subjects. He,is President of the New England States Chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians and the college would, no doubt,.be a sponsor. "Smoking and the Nonsmoker" would be included as one of the topics if the symposium goes forward. I have written Dr. Huber the enclosed letter with regard to transferring the special chemistry supplementary grant ($147,000) to his general fund accounts. Dr. Huber has provided me some material describing a rat experiment at Batelle Northwest Laboratories which may involve findings similar to his but which will apparently be announced sometime after his Las Vegas presentation.
