UC You have raised the question as to whether or not' technical assistance might be provided by the Research u experiments would not be successful in the environment of that laboratory. There were obvious serious shortcomings, and I mentioned to you that this was my opinion after our visit there. infection and the closing of the laboratory. You will recall that I rather emphatically stated that long term Directors with respect to the problems that led to animal CTR has had considerable experience in this area, and there is every reason to believe that people like Gardner and Kreisher can provide whatever assistance is required.'' I can also list animal facilities which are suitably designed for these types of studies. It is my recommendation that Doctor Gardner be asked to review the suitability of the facility with the proposed changes before funds are provided. From what I've read, I do not believe that the requested changes are going to be adequate and I would hesitate on approving the expenditure without full consideration of the facility requirements against planned experimentation~. In other words, I think there is more to come. I believe that Dr. Arthur Furst, who used to be on the Scientific Advisory Board of the CTR staff, would be a better choice for such a task.
