January 30, 1978
The tlonorable Joseph A. Cali'fano, Jr.
The Secretary of Health, Education s Welfare
Washington, DC 20201
Dear Secretary Cali'fano:
This is to acknowledge your letter of January 14, 1978 to Elton Rule
relating to your request for the availability of anti-smoking public
service announcements over our facilities.
The ABC Radio and Television networks have for a number of years included
ih their public service allocation schedules anti-smoking announcements
submitted to us by a number of organizations, such as the American Lung
Association, American Cancer Society, and American Heart Association.
Insofar as our five owned television stations are concerned, we have
maintained schedules of anti-smoking announcements not only from the
national associations that have been made available over the ABC Television
Network, but also from a number of local heart and lung associations and
anti-smoking clinics as well.
The ABC Radio Network, which as you may know, consists of four networks,
i.e., American Entertainment, American Contemporary Radio Network. American
PM, and American Informationj and those owned radio stations which progra.
to a significant number of teenage Americans similarly maintain a schedule
of messages from the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association,
,and American Lung Associations. -
I have passed along your letter to the several departments that are con-
eerned with the review and scheduling of public service announcements, and
have asked that they examine our allocations in light of your letter and
give further consideration to your request in the context of our overall
oomnitments in our public service announcement schedule.
r ~.
