Dear Joe:
Never having smoked I find it easy to urge others not to.
Nbtwithstanding, I want to d'o everything possible to
assist you in bringing the "message" to the public via
our stations. I don't know whether you recall, but
Group W took tobacco ad!vertising off the air over a
year before the governme.ntal ban.
I must confes s, however, I think there are other areas
which are at least as serious as the smoking problem.
Alcoholism in America today has reached 11 million adults
and over I million children between the ages of 9 and 12.
Half of the automobile accidents are traced to individuals
having consumed alcohol a short time before. I was a
member of a task force with Governor West of South
Ca:rolina having to do with this subject, and we came up
with a new approach in this regard which was presented
to President Carter a few months ago, a copy of which
I'm enclosing.
This is the case of "pitching the pitcher" and I know you have
a number of important causes but I can't help but bring this
to your attention.
