Thank you for your letter of December 19, 1979. We are
very pleased by your approval of our longitudinal smoker
separation arrangement.
From a purely technical viewpoint, the airlines have long
been aware that cabin air circulation is essentially lateral,
not fore to aft as is commonly believed. Pressurized air is
pumped in through overhead vents on each side of the plane,
tends to loop down and back, and is drawn through exhaust
vents near floor level and expelled into the outer atmosphere.
We believe that the starboard smoker section arrangement is
roughly equivalent in effectiveness to the former fore and
aft separation. However, the arrangement has drawn considerable
criticism from anti-smokers, probably because the smoke is
visible to them, and we understand that the Civil Aeronautics
Board is considering still further rules governing separation.
