..r.,.~,.. I i4 ~ Everett Hanson Executive Director YUTJR CHAr!CE TO BE COU;TED .4ithout a doubt, elected officials are most influenced by their precepti on of public opinion. When they are not campaigning they rely on their rr.ail, phone calls, and the media to keep them abrest of constituent sentiment. 3y sending a letter or card to the Milwaukee Journal you can be influencial. It is very important t at you sen your letter this wee'.. It does not have to be lon~, or profound. The Journal has state wide circul-tion so everyone, to;-,ether with their employees, family and friends, should respond. A bill in the Legislature would prohibit smoking in public places or at public meetings, except in areas designated for smoking. Does this properly affirm the nonsmoker's right to clean air? Or improperly limit a smoker's freedom to puff? Do you believe there is a real health hazard to nonsmokers? Would a ban be enforceable in stores, restaurants, bars? Could special smoking areas be established? How should vio- lators be punished? Is common cour tesy the best answer? If more nonsmokers simply asked smokers to put out their cigars or cigarets, what would happen? A selection of replies will be published on Monday, April 25, in the Editorial Page Forum. However, to be considered, letters must arrive by Monday, April 18, and must include name and address, not necessarily for publication.
