SUBJECT: T. D. Sterl' g and'Elia Sterling -- Office Building
Syndrome
I have talked with Bill Shinn and Bernie O'Neill regarding,
this project proposal and obtained the following information:
(1) "Architectural Stress Information Schedule" means a
questionnaire to collect data on architectural features of the
building; for example, number of windows, air conditioning, -
type of office partitions, etc. However, the questionnaire has
not been developed and these are only the kind of examples that
were discussed.
(2) Bill thinks Sterling needs to do research in order to
attend and participate in scientific meetings of those concerned
with indoor air pollution. This proposal would serve that need.
(3) Office building syndrome is thought to be prevalent .
among a significant number of workers but they had no incidence
figure. I have never heard of it.
(4) Bernie O'Neill felt this to be only a beginning investi-
.gation by Sterling into this subject when I expressed the view
that this proposal would~raise more questions than it would resolve
and the data would be "soft" in nature.
(5) Collection of information on noise, temperature, humidity,
and level of pollution is not planned.
(6) RJR and'B&W have approved the proposal.
My earlier feeling that the"'science"of this is weak has not
changed.
