ASHRAE TC2.3 Newsletter
ASHRAE's annual meeting will take place June 28-July 2, 1981 at the Nether-
land Hilton Hotel in Cincinnati. The program contains the following items of
interest to our committee:
Mon., 10:15 a.m., Forum: What do engiineers, contractors or end users want
or need to know about the use of sorbents for removal of contaminants other
than moisture?
Tues., 8:45 a.m., Seminar: Issues in an air tightness standard for new resi,
dential construction.
;:Tues., 8:45 a.m., Forum: Energy savings throughinaturall ventilation.
I received special pleas from James Payne and Dan Kramer to recruit interested
attendees for a forum entitled "Water treatment: Control of bacteria (e.g., legion-
ella), corrosion control and methods." The forumS to be held on Sunday at 12:45
p.m.,"is sponsored by the new TG on health and safety. I have served as liaison
between the TG and TC2.3.
~ The business meeting of our committee will take place on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
in Parlor G. I chose this somewhat unorthodox time in order to eliminate conflicts
with other TC meetings. I hope to keep the duration of the meeting down to about
90 minutes.
Accompanying, thiis newsletter you wilI find a formito indicate a) whether or
not you will attend the business meeting, b) suggestions for the agenda, and c)
your vote on the acceptability of Davi&Becker's final report on ASHRAE RP183,
"Organic contaminants in indoor air and their relation to outdoor contaminants:
Statistical analysis," sent by mail! from IITRI a few weeks ago. I have promised
J. R. Wright, ASHRAE director of technology, that I would inform him in Cincinnati
about the committee's decision on the report. Furthermore, we wish to include the
report, if acceptable to our committee, in the program for a symposium on indbor
.air quality that we will cosponsor with TC4.3 (Ventilation and Infiltration) for
the Houston meeting. Howard Ross, vice chairman of TC4.3, wants the papers in hand'
by July 15. Please vote, so that we can meet these deadlines.
Regarding the ASHRAE program, our plan for a forum in Cincihnatiion cigarette
smoke somehow got short-circuited. Nevertheless, Amnon Birenzvige and Brian,
Krafthefer have already invited three prominent scientists to submit papers for a
symposium "Cigarette smoke and indoor air quality" to be proposed for the Houston
meeting. I ha& hoped for a more gradual evolutioni of this program item, from forum
to seminar (unpublished) to symposiumi(published). •Some developments with Commit'tee
TT-7, Indoor Air Quality, of the Air Pollution Control Association have altered
that earlier state of affairs. In brief, the APCA committee, which has a very dis-
tinguished roster, would like to join, us as cosponsors of a symposium% They would
also like greater on-going contact with ASHRAE. I have attached'a sample of corres-
pondence on the matter and will solicit your views in Cincinnati [see Attachment A].

Bill Stacey of Brigham Young University is now our program subcommittee
chairman. I will ask him to report in Cincinnati on the composition and pllans
of the subcommittee. Attachment B is the schedule for submission of program
items. You should keep it handy in case you have any thoughts about items for._
future meetings.
I hope to obtain reports from other subcommittee chairmen in Cincinnati, par-
ticularly Frank Daylor (membership)land Steve Frazier (handbook). Steve has just
sent a draft revision of handbook chapter 33, "Control of gaseous contaminants."'
It is included here as Attachment C. Please read it.
Progress on research sponsored by TC2.3 has been a little less smooth than
usual during the past'few months. -A5. most of you know, Frank Jarke left IITRI,
thereby necessitating a change in project management of RP-238, "Tobacco smoke
~' odor control and test method development." Allan Gaynor is serving,as interim,
project manager. Another development is that Amnon Birenzvige has left TRC Environ-
mental Consultants, thereby necessitating a change in project management of RP-268,
"Development of test method for gaseous contamination removal devices." Amnon's
co-investigator, Richard Duffee, will remain on the project and another TRC staff
tmember Ned Ostojiic will assume duties on the project. Amnon will be retained as
a consultant. In view, of these developments I have suspended action on Amnon's
proposal entitled "Mlinimum ventilation rate required in toilet rooms in public and
commercial! buildings," circulated' in January.
' The final attachments are rosters of TC2.3. The tentative roster for 1981-1982'
covers the period beginning July 1, 1981. Please seek to recruit new active members
among your friends and colleagues.
