Dear Mr. Elsey: It has just come to our attention that at its recent annual meeting, your organization adopted a resolution which has been subr.:ittedto your local chapters calling for the discouraging of smokingon American Red Cross premises and in its meetings. I am advised further that the rationale in great part had to do with a finding that the weight of medical evidence suggests that tobacco smoking can adversely affect the health of nonsmokers. My purpose in writing is to call to your attention an apparent misunderstanding. tAIhile there may be some evidence of such an effect, the weight of relevant evid'en ce strongly suggests the contrary. This being the case, implementation of this resolution may well cause unfounded concern and unneeded inconvenience for many ARC volunteers and members. I would'very much welcome an~ opportunity to discuss this matter with you and other appropriate officials of your organization. If you are agreeable to such a meeting, I would like to have our medical consultant, Dr. George Schafer, accompany me. Your interest andcooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
