In May the national convention of the American Red Cross
adopted a resolution calling for discouragement of smoking in
ARC meetings and facilities.

The resolution does not become ARC policy unless it is
approved by the ARC Board of Governors. Chapters of the ARC
.throughout the country are now examining the resolution and notifying
the Board of their views.
It is important for you to identify'as many chapters in your
area as possible, to learn whether they have reacted' to the resolution,
and -to supply them with information and encouragement to notify the
Board of Governors of their disapproval. The issues here are no
different than those involved in protesting anti-smoking legislation.
Enclosed are a copy of the resolution, a copy of a statement
used by Dr. Eichorn of Philip Morris, a member of the board of the
Richmond, Va., chapter of ARC, which voted down the resolution, and a
report from Horace Kornegay of his meeting with the executive director
of ARC.
