October 4, 1982 INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM SUBJECT: Stop-smoking Campaign to be Announced by American College of Chest Physicians On October 13, the ACCP'will introduce its "Smoking, Cessation Program" during the World' Congress on Diseases of the Chest iniToronto (Oct. 10-15)1. (The ACCP'announced a similar program at its 1979 meeting in Houston, but that was more wish than fact; the current effort seems to be better organized and more purposeful.) The ACCP will urge its 11,000 members to ed~ucate and counsel patients about the dangers of smoking and to work with other health professionals in having communities adopt antismoking, programs. A "Physician's Office Guide and Work Kit" has been developed for ACCP members; it includes suggestions for counseling patients, motivational literature and various materials, including statistical diagrams and graphs. A symposium on "Smoking,Cessation" will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13', in Toronto. It will be chaired by William H. Anderson,. Louisville, and'will include as speakers: Sir JohniCroftoni, Edinburgh; Edwin B. Fisher, Jr., St. Louis; and Michael A.H. Russell, Londoni. The ACCP cites a recent study by Russell as evidence that physicians, by spending a minute or two counseling their patients about stopping smoking, can achieve a significant success rate. (See item No. 20, page 15, in our Sept. 29 memo on the recent International Cancer Congress.) The ACCP'has retained a public relations firm, at 1'east to make the official announcement of its new program. The firm is The Public Relations Board, Chicago (150 East Hu~ron St.). For your information, we will be covering, the Toronto meeting. LSZ eun[ard a.hn andAs PUBUC RFLAT i©NS COUNSEL sociates, lnc. (P. O. 80X 223)113 LINCOLN ROAD • GREAT NECK„N.Y. 11021 •(212) B95•7445
