December 30, 1982 William E. Lobeck, President. Thrifty Rent-a-Car P.O. Box 35250 Tulsa, OK 74135 Dear Mr. Lobeck: For a company enjoying a good reputation and, one hopes, a reasonable profit on supplying relatively inexpensive transportation, isn't it somewhere near the edge of absurdity to advertise "no-smoking" cars? I encountered your ad in the Dec. 27 Business Week with both sorrow and amazement, noting its dominant display of a no-smoking symbol surely appropriate to the front of a gas pump but certainly of questionable taste for your company. Please rethink the values anddifficulties (what is the local agent to do, for example, when a passenger inadvertantly converts one of your vehicles to a"smoking" car?) in competitive advertising whose effect is to stimulate social division between a lot of nice people. At the very least, I cannot believe that the message will stimulate patronage by the tens of thousands of tobacco industry travelers throughout the world. Cordially, William Kloepfer, Jr. WK/gdc
