e W March 22', 1984 INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM fECT: 1984 Surgeon General's ~ego~"t a d American Lung Assn./American Thoracic Society The 1984 Surgeon General's Report, which will be on smoking and lung diseases, is to be issued during the annual ALA/ATS annual meeting, May 20-23, 198'4, in Miami Beach. There will be a joint audio-visual press com erence be- tween Washington and Miami Beach, according,to present infor- mation. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop is tolgive the major ad- dress at 4:30 p.m. keynote session, May 20, in Miami Beach. attract mulch press. As of now, it's thought that he'll return to Washington for the press conference because there'll be a much larger media turnout there. The ALA/ATS meeting generally doesn"t Also, a special press conference on marijuana is planned for the morning,of May 21i at the ALA/ATS meeting to announce "new" health findings about the drug and to kick off a major national program aimed at kids aged 9-11 years. Therefore, it seems likely that the Surgeon Genieral's press conference will be on May 22 or 23. As of now, we have only brief information about the ALA/ATS meeting itself. Scientific sessions (the ATS part of the meeting) will include many papers related to smoking. (Nearly 1,400 abstracts have been submitted.) The ALA part will have, as in the past, a Community Education Programifor staff, board members, ATS members, and volunteers. This year the program will cover such areas as: Making No Smoking the Norm; Curbing S'moking,at the Workplace; Countering Tobacco Tactics; "Freedom Line": Telephone Hotline for Smoking Re- lapse Prevenition; and Smoking or Health -- Program Showcases. N.B. There'll be a special scientific that reportedly will include discussioniof statement onithe health effects of smoking.
