C December 19, 1978 INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM Subject: Anti-Smoking Reports American Heart Association Science Writers Forum Hilton Head, S.C., Jan. 14-17, 1979 Preliminary information has been obtained about two anti- smoking reports expected to be given at this meeting: 1. A Boston scientist will discuss how educational TV plus self-help groups may provide the key for helping the "dependent smoker" to quit. He will cover ongoing work at Harvard and Stan- ford (Stanford Heart Disease Project) and at "field-sites" in Massachusetts, California (probably Stanford's Three Community Study) and Finland (probably the Kuopio or North Karelia area). The report also is expected to refer to possible benefits from the TV-self-help approach in regard to alcoholism and drug abuse. 2. Richard Naeye of Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey, is expected to talk about adverse effects of smoking on the outcome of pregnancy. He will cover findings from the U.S. Collaborative Perinatal Project which he discussed at length in a formal talk and during,a press conference at the recent AHA annual meeting (Dallas, Nov. 13-16, 1978)• He's ex- pected to report on the effects of smoking on: premature sep- aration of the placenta, Rh disease, congenital heart malfor- mations, shortened pregnancies, low birth weight infants, lower IQ values, and sudden infant death syndrome. There also will be a report on the impact of the Framingham .Heart Study on preventive cardiology -0- January's Forum, the sixth held by the AHA,-is for press people only. As in previous years, I've been invited to attend and expect to be there. The Forum is always held in January be- cause February is Heart Month. It usually generates considerable press attention.
