The attached statement by Bill Kloepfer resulted from a memo I dictated
to his secretary on the publication date of the article by Friedman, et al
in the New England Journal of Medicine entitled "Mortality in Middle-Aged
Smokers and Nonsmokers". Your inquiry of February 9 deals with this paper.
I did only a cursory review of the article because Dr. Carl Seltzer
had'been integrally involved with this study from its inception. Seltzer's
first communication with the editor of the NEJM is in the form of a request
for time to draft an adequate response. I enclose a copy of Seltzer's
petition to the editor.
I also know that Dr. Alvan Feinstein has been~involved in this study.
He and Seltzer have been in touch, but I do not know the substance of their
discussions.
