$5.9 MILLION GIVEN FOR
SMOKING-HEALTH STUD][ES
New York -- Smoking and health studies totaling more

than $5',,900,0i00 were awarded last year by the Council for
Tobacco Research,-U.S.A., Iin,c., it was announced~today.
The studies included 20 new pro jects,, many of' which
are jiust getting under way, as well as a number of renew-
als for previously approved projects.
The Council''s research support has grown to more than
$51, 00i0, 0'0i0 since its formation 25 years ago. It has funded
some 640 original grants and contracts for independent in-
vestigators in nearly 2510 med!ical schools,, hospitals and
researchli!nstitutions.
Grant recipients, who are responsible for disclosing
their findings,, have so far published 1,636 articles in
medical andiscientific p.ublications on their Council-sup-
ported studies.
The Council awards grants following recommendations
by a Scientific Advisory Board currently consisting of nine
physicians and scientists.
