j~ .. 0 MH[ )yly, . . "SMQKIN'G DOET-OT CAUSE HEART DISEASE AI~ DRINKING'IN' MODERATION ACTUALLY R :DUCES IT" (' -- TV Reports And Interviews With Dr. Carl Seltzer, Of > Harvard,University (Channel 0 News. Friday, May 4,,1979. Monitored through ATVO, Melbourne: 6.00 p.m,) Newsreader: Li~ht up,, drink up and stay ea lthy:! That's the good ne•es from American expert, Dr. Carl Seltzer, who claims that smoking, is not related to heart da'isease andithat drinki~ng doesn't do much harm either.. The Harvard Uni~versilty lecturer says he"s never beenichal'ler, ged' by the medical profession. - & He''s talking now to IaniGneller at the Hilton Hotel: Renorter: You know„ I'm rather pleased to hear that both smoking and drinking are not all that badlfor you. After -a1l', they are two of my favourite pastimes.. And Dr. Seltzer's word must be taken, very seriously. After all, he I9'the doctor of Harvard University.. But with all due res;ect, what you say flies in the face of every other medical statement: Dr. Seltzer: E•,cactly: It does. As a matter of fact, ie St~rgeon-General in his brand-new report w!:ich was.., came out in January 1r)79', states i~n there, and 11 r:an, quote him: that there is n^ relationship that they have found between the time of a heart attack and' smnking. R~e~ o~rter: You've said that there is a distinct difference etb ~ween a smoker and a non-smoker. What are they'?' 2/«..

smoking, . . . t wo Dr. Seltzer: Oh, yes. There have been many, many studies -- probably well over 100 papers that have been written by various people. 1„ myself, contributed a dozen or more. For example, smokers marry more often than non-smokers. They get divorced more often. They move their jobs, they move jobs more often. They're much~ more extroverted',, more outgoing, more driving. Time is the essence of' them. They've got a time element bomb in them. But it has also been determined by psychologists who describe them as being much more interesting people. "Moderate Drinker Has Lower Rates Of' Heart Disease " + Re orte~r: What you're really saying is non-smokerss ar..e ring?' Dr. Seltzer: W'el!1„ they, say that. But then it's nott the boring...if' you want to describe people wlio are more introverted, more inner-directed, more quiet, more introspectivey if that"s boring, well, OK, then they are more boring in that sense. `Reporter: Dr. Seltzer„ you were one of the first scientists to say that having the occasional cocktail or drini: was not BAD for you. '!I must say that both these things I really love, so could'you tell me something about that? Dr. Seltzer: Well, not only is it bad for yoii, it is actually good for you (,sic); the persons who drink, the occasilonal moderate drin§:er„rias lower rates of' heart disease than people who dorr't drink at all. And this is well recognised today by cardiologists all over the world, and many of them reco.mend to their patients,, even patients who have alreadyy had' a heart attack: 'Be sure to take a cocktail at the end of the d'ay," and that wouldibe beneficial to them. Reportert OK. So what you're saying is smoking and' drinking inimoderation aren't all that bad for you? Dr. Seltzer: Well I would say go even a little further ---AYTi:ING in moderation is the way one should! live. ~._ ~ 11
