' Dear Friend: i Thank you for joining the Tobacco Action Network. Your response by enrolling in this vital pro- gram indicates an interest in dealing with the / challenges facing not onty the tobacco industry but other business communities and your rights as an individual citizen as well. Critics of our industry are numerous and unrelenting. Their demands are steadily in- creasing for prohibition, regulation and coercion by public authorities. This is true in every facet of the tobacco economy-from the growers' fields to customers' behavior. The impact upon your business and your own personal conduct will be enormous if they are successful. Anti-tobacco groups have been spurred on by recent legislative successes and through major propaganda campaigns playing to a misinformed public. If these efforts are un- checked, the end result will be the blind denial of public and private individual rights and the destruction of one of our nation's oldest industries. The T-obacco Action Network program is designed to meet the challenge. This booklet provides you with a number of ways you can get involved and make your program a success. We hope you will use the suggestions in this booklet to help the Tobacco Action Network replace tobacco fiction with tobacco tacts.
