Mar. 15 Federal Relations requests additionaL general contact assis- tance with 20 Congressmen (not specifically on labeling legislation). Mar. 17 H.R. 1824 hearings - Day 2. Mar. 22 Information from Waxman hearings and S. 772.mailed to field staff and lobbyists. Mar. 25 - Contact with Congressmen continued through Easter recess. Apr. 4 Apr. 14 E-COM message sent to 1,500 TAN members in districts of 9 selected Subcommittee members. Area Directors were charged with generating as many letters as possible to these Congressmen. Letters are now being accumulated by field staff. Apr 20 Federal Relations requests field staff and lobbyists to com- mence personal contact with members of the Senate Labor and Human Resource Committee. Four contacts with;Senators and/or staff have been reported to date. May 5 S. 772 hearings - Day 1. May 12 S. 772 hearings - Day 2.

Federal Labeling Legislation 1983 Jan. 25 Federal Relations initiates Waxman co-sponsor project; state lobbyists and Area Directors begin personal contacts on 1982 co-sponsors of Waxman labeling legislation. Feb. 9 TI staff meeting convened to review the Waxman project. Feb. 10 Federal Relations prioritizes list of 1982 co-sponsors. Contact of co-sponsors, and 1983 House Energy and Commerce Committee, continues with effort aimed at personal visits and phone calls by lobbyists and field staff who are known personally to the member of Congress. Within four weeks, approximately 40 such contacts were made by 30 individuals either in Washington or the home district. Feb. 17 Action Request sent to member companies requesting immediate approval to begin TAN letter-writing project to members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Anticipatory approval was also requested to contact all House members, members of the Senate committee(s)., and the full Senate if the bill progressed. Feb. - At the request of State Activities staff, Governors Brown, Mar. Hunt, Riley and Robb sent letters prepared by TI staff to members of their state's Congressional delegation, to the House leadership and to members bf the House Energy and Com- merce Committee. Governor Hunt met personally with Speaker 0'Neill. Mar. 3 Member companies approved the Action Request. Area Directors were to generate 10 or more quality communi- cations to 42 selected members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. There are copies of over 600 constituent letters to these Congressmen on file at this time. Mar. 4 Background material mailed to all state lobbyists. Visits, phone calls and letters by lobbyists, field staff and TAN members continued through March.
