FOR RELEASE'IN AMIS OF TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1971 NEW TOBACCO-HEALTH GRANTS ANNOUNCED; ONE HELPS REVIVE FRAMINGHAM HEART STUDY Niew York -- Grants for 1$ new studies into tobacco and health and for renewals of a number of on-going projects have been madee since January 1 by The Council for Tobacco Research-U.S.A., Inc., it was announced today. The total was $2,353,000. The awards, made to independent scientists who conduct the studies in their own~medical schools, hospitals and research in- stitutions, include one that i~s helping keep alive the famed Framingham Heart Study. Major parts of this project, which~was to have been ended for lack of federal funding, are being con- tinued with support from The Council and other agencies. The Council functions as a sponsoring agency for studies into tobacco and health. Grants and contracts are awarded by The Coun- cil on the recommendation of the Scientific Advisory Board, a group of 10 physicians and scientists responsible for The Council's research program. Since The Council's formation in 1954!by lead- ing cigarette companies and organizations of tobacco growers and~ warehousemen, it has made 426 original awards and many more re- newals to 263 scientists for a total of more than $20,000,000. The new stud'ies cover work in the fields of cancer, heart disease and chronic pulmonary ailments. Among t'hem are: ...Smoking classes, risk factors and cardiovascular di- sease. (This is part of'the Framingham Heart Study.) ...Characteristics of smokers and nonsmokers. ...Studies of tumor-causing viruses. ...Changes in cytology of the tracheobronchial tree. ...Role of the human alveolar macrophages in the pro- duct'i~on of emphysema. ...Behavioral hypertension and arteriosclerosis: effects of nicotine.
