• . TonACCoINDUSTHFIZ};SE.AIlC C03mIYQ'1'Sai RESEARCH PROGRAM SUhMRY (COITFIDE'iT"PIAL)~ I.- SCIEAITTFIC BASI'S' FOR PROCRA1d Sound scientific basis for our program involves focus and emphasis on research on causes an&development of the following diseases: a. lung cancer b. bladder cancer c. buccal area cancer d:. prostatic cancer e. cardiovascular diseases f. emphysema-bronchitis-asthma' It is'essential to maintain~focus and basic interest im the diseases as such, thereby keeping, our °target" broad enouC];l~to (1) hold the interest of the top research men on our Scientific Advisory Board, and (2) keep us in a position where we can effectively follow any new and promising research leads that may appear. II. LIiNES OF RESEARCH A. Critical epidemiological studies: inhaliation, sex ratio, degrees of'sTMokinS, morbidit.y; rate of'increase; previoas infection, cause vs. agE~ravation. The major objectives of such studies would'be: (1). (2) to re-analyze existing data from new points of view and by new methods. to derive new data from available sources of epicie:!iological'. nattv e and to present these in various ways that might indicate eitner their limitations or usefulness. (3)1 to assist iin planning and in interpreting the biostatistical sigrifi- cance of TIRC-supported work. B. Chemistry of smoke: absorption, systemic effects, etc. The major objectives of such studies are: (1) to maintain proper perspective betwecn studies on whole s:ho'-:e and those on condensates and on single substances derived from~sc:cke. (2) to analyze methods by whieh~smoke and/or its constituents are absorbed and'are mctaboliized. (3) to provide proper cooperation with research on che:ni_stry'of tobacco bein-, planned or executed in industry laboratories. 4 -T -

C - 2 - C_. "cro ^n:i brttrr methods of bioacsay: species dosa: c. The rajor objectives of (1) such studies are: (genetics), organ and tissue response, to.develop~a perspective of relative values of different methods of bioassay, which shoulid lead to (a), better understanding of the component factors in the response of the host animal to different challenges. (b), better understanding of the degree to which results of animal experimentation are properly transferrable to man. D_. Inproved clinical-patholoqical stud'ies: biochemical functional, psycho-physio- lobical, constitutional and personality differences. The major objectives of such studies are: to eliminate many of the undesirable variables involved in~studies based on questionnaires, lay interviews and death certificates. (2) to afford continued intensive study of individualis who are likely to provide data by scientific tests and measurements on the ori~in and! development of the diseases in which we are primarily interested. (3)' to provide rr.ore reliable data on the possible role of genetic, constitutional habits. an1personality differences in determining sraoicinp (1') III. SCII•fiTTIrIC SS',= CObiP05IF1I0Pa A. (iR. C. Hockett) Biochemistry B. (J. M. Brady) Clinical-Pathological New Appointments C. Biostatistician D. Biologist It is probable that authority to appoint up to five po_zt-doctoral research fellows at $10,000 per annum fer five years will be requestcd. These fello•,rs will work under top scientists at various institutions on, problcros selected by TIiiC. It will be necessary to provide tenure and i-e:nsioni plc_ns for staff' appointees equal to those of Goverrr;ent and industry aprointecs. It iin.y well be ncce ,sary to offer sal :ries in cxce5s of' tl-.ose off_ cred by the.`.ee othc?r organizations.
