APPROVAL OF GRANTS FOR INITIiATION OF'RESEARCH'BY GRANTEE It will be noted that at this meeting the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) considered the grants for scientific merit only and approved or disapproved accordingly. Following each approval', each member of' the SAB rated the a lication relevance with res ect to the CTR ro ram. Majqr importance is ascribed to the following actors in estab- lishing re evance: (1) smoke inhalation research, (2) motivation for smoking, (3) epidemiology, (4) twin studies, (5) nitrosamines; and'.otlhers. The staff`at CTR will tabulate the ratimgs for the applications which had been approve 'on the basis of scientific merit a31d wilil then establish an order of preference for the "ha~_!~ rn rhe CTR n*n&r4m The E:cecutive Committee of the SAB will then approve the grants, the number of grants to be approved being dependent upon both (1) availability of funds, and (2) the preference ratings. Thus, it can be seen that some of the applications for grants may not be activated owing to unavailability of funds,,even though they may have been approved on the basis of scientific merit. C. CONTRACTS AT TEE ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IL.SEARCH iNSTITLiE Two projects had been in progress at the Institute; these were: Riesen and Kyle.
