Gardner, President of the In- ternational Union Against Cancer, has been appointed Scientific Director of The Council for Tobacco Research-U.S.A., Inc., it was announced today. Dr. Gardner, a,cancer researcher for more than 40:years, recently retired as E. K. Hunt Professor of Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine, a position he had held since 1958. He also had been Professor and Chairman of Yale's Depart- ment of Anatomy from 1943-i9617- It also was announced that Dr. Robert C. Hockett, who had~ been Acting Scientific Director since the Cook Little two~years ago, had been named Dr. Hockett joined;The Council in,1954 as, death of Dr. Clarence Research Director. Associate Scientific Director. Before that he had beenlan Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, and!Scientific Director of the: Sugar Research Foundation. In 1970 Dr. Gardner was elected President of the Inter- national Union Against Cancer, which now has 146 member orga- nizations in 72 countries. He will serve in~that post until the Union's 1974 meeting. Dr. Gardner, a native of Kinbrae, Minn., was educated at South Dakota State College and received advanced~degrees at the University of Missouri. He joined Yale University in 1933 as a National Research Council Fellow.

2'. The author or co-author of'more than 200 scientific ar- ticles, he has been President of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Association of Anatomists. He is a scientific advisor to two funds that sponsor scientific research and also has served on committees and councils of various agencies and organizations, among them the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, National Research Council, and Association of American Medical Colleges. He also has held editorial positions on several scientific journals. The Council for Tobacco Research supports research by in- dependent scientists into smoking and health. It awards grants for such research after applications are reviewed by a Scien- tific Advisory Board currently consisting of 10 physicians and scientists. Dr. Gardner joined the Board last year, at which time he became Scientific Consultant to The Council. -0-
