BOX 523 • 13 LINCOLN ROAD • GREAT NECK„N.Y: 11021 •(212) 895-7445 M c-r~?, 'Q ESE PCW M TOBACCO RESEARCH GROUP ANNOUNCES NEW STUDIES New York -- The role of genetic factors in lung cancer and emphysema andithe possible influence of nicotine on fetal growth are among 12 new scientific studies that have just been funded,, The Council for Tobacco Research-U.S.A., Inc. announced today. The new awards bring to about 500 the number of original grants and contracts supported by The Council since 1954• The total research alilocation to date;is over $28', 000, 000. The projects are a continuation of The Council's programy now in its 21st year, to obtain scientific information related to smoking and health. The Council makes awards after applileations for research support are reviewed by a Scientific Advisory Board currently consisting of 10 di~stinguishediphysicians and scientists. . The Council, organized by tobacco manufacturers, growers and warehousemen, does not operate any research facility. It provides funds for research by independent sci,ent'ists who con- duct their studi~es in their own medical schools, hospitals and laboratories. Findings from Councili-supported projects have been reported so far in more than 1200 articles in medical and scientific pub- lications. -0- (Attached is a list of the scientists who received the new grants, their institutions, and their project titles.)
