FOR RELEASE AM'S OF FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1976 14 NEW STUDIES FUNDED BY TOBACCO RESEARCH COUNCIL New York -- Fourteen new scientific studies dealing with various aspects of smoking and health were announced today by the Council for Tobacco Research-U.S.A.,, Inc. Among them are projects on the inhibition of cancer by different chemicals, the influence of nicotine on pregnancy and the effects of cigarette smoke on the body's disease- fighting system. Since its formationlin 1954, the Council has provided over $'3'5,000,000 for smoking and health research. More than 520 original grants andicontracts, plus numerous renewals, have been approved for independent scientists in some 230 medical schools, hospitals and research institutions. A total of 1,340 articles describing,findings from Council-supported projects has appeared so far in medical and scientific publications. Grants are made by the Council following,a review of applications for research support by a Scientific Advisory Board currently consisting of 11 physiciansand scientists. The Council does not operate any research facility. It provides funds for independent scientists who conduct their studies in their own institutions and are responsible for disclosing the results in the accepted scientific manner. -0- (Attached is a list of the scientists who received the new grants, their institutions and their project titles.)
