i TOBACCO IN .S"TITUTE 1776 KSTREET, NORTHWEST/WASHINGTON„D'.C. 20006 202/457-4800 June 20, 1978 Arthur J.. Stevens, Esquire Vice President & General Counsel Lorillard 6.66,Fifth Avenue New York~, NY 10019 Dear Art: JOHN D. KELLY Senior Vice President 202/457-4'857 As you probably know,, the protracted strugg,le leading to the defeat on two occasions of Assembly Bill 8565-D imNewi York State was the result of a concerted effort by many peopl'e and many organizations acting under one umbrella. Morton JI. Getman, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of theNew,York Chamber of Commerce andIndustry,. was one of the aforementioned individuals and'org, anizationst that participated to the fullest and' was aikey a1!ly! to the tobacco~industry. Mort's: professionalismiand expertise were trul~y a valuable asset tolus. In additionito filing a memorandum against the Grannis bill, which was sent to all mermbers:of the New York State Assembly, the New York Chamber of C'ommerce and Industry conducted aispecial, survey responded tolby 29&member companies, employing more than 300,000 people. The survey dealt with questions relating to the impact of the Grannis bill on commercial off'ices. Youimiay know, too:, that Mort, shortly before the current legislative session began, took over th~e governmental affairs responsibilities of the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry an~d is attempting,to build up its membership. The New York Chamber certainly deserves strong, and continued support of its members.. It wouldl perhaps also be a nice gestu~re to write a letter to Mort in!recognition of'his outstanding involvement. Sincerely,. -0 John D. Kelly JDK:mwf
