public hearing of the Subcommittee on, Hi.R. 4957, the "Stnoking
Prevention Ed!ucation Act of1981". The hearing will begin at
9.415a.m. in Room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
I amenclosing a copy of H.R. 41957for your review.
In addition to your specific comments on the pending
legislation, I would'I appreciate it if you would d'iscuss the
steps, if any, the Tobacco Institute or.cigarette manuEac-
turersiyou represent have taken tolinformlAmericans about the
heallth effects of smoking. The health effects of smoking by
children is a particular concernlof many Members and your
comments onithis, important area ofhealth promotion policy
would be especially helpful to, our deliberations.
The Subcommittee requests that all presentations be
limited to a five minute summary of your written statement.
Of course, your full written statement will be printed in the
hearing record. We find that this procedure allows more time.
for discussion between Members of the Subcommittee and'
witnesses.
The rules of the Committee on Energy and Commerce
require that 75, copies ofyour testimony be filed with the
