\ ( The Honorable John A„ Dingell Chaiirman,, Energy & Commerce Committee U.S. Senate I, myself, left the world of big business to establish my own cosmetic business. After three years of struggling, and starting to_ "make a go of it''', 1[ had to close the door because of'new federal regulations, "''designed to protect the consuuner". Later, it was determined that these regula- tions were a burden on business and rescinded. For me, it was too late, We cannot let this happenagain, I urge you to vote against this legislation, In fact, it should'be defeated in Committee. Fred .Tacobs 32'0 E. 25th Street New York, New York 10010 Februaary2S,, 1982 The Honorable .John A. Dingell Chairman, Energy & Commerce Committee U. S , Senate - Washington,, D, C', Dear S~enator ; This letter is to voice my concern over proposed bill S-192'9', I think that this bill,, calling for airoltationiof cigarette warnings on packaging and in advertising,, is nothing more than aldisguised effort to eliminate cigarette advertising and,, ultimately, cigarette sales from the marketplace,, More important, this entire piiece of legislation is based upon beliefs and statistical evidence rather than hardcore scientific fact,, as s ould be required, T17:is legislation is a clear case of too mucliigovernment and "Big B'rother"', While the majority of this nation are non- smokers, where are the rights of minority toldo as they wish, without harming others, protected~,, Where are the rights of business to freely communicate honest and truthful in, formation protected, If this legislation is passed, what will stop future legislation from attacking a product that "offends the majority"', Government''s roile should be to inform the public. In a free economy, consumers determine if a prod'uct continues toible soldby deciding whether or not they will buy it.
