S .A. , Inc., 110 East 5'9th Street,, New Y'or:c„ New Y'.ork 10022,, was born in Fayette,, Mi:ssouri on July, 1, 1906. A graduate of the Ohio State University, Dr. Hoickett pursued - graduate study in the same institution and received the Ph.D. degree in chemistry there in 1929. As a National Research Council Fellow in Ciiemistry, he was a guest scientist at the National Institute of' Hiealth, U.S., Public Health, Service from 1929 to -1931 and' then Associate Chemist on the Institute staff from,193'1 to 193'5. In 1935 he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology a~s Assistant Professor of Chemistry,, becoming Associate P'rofessor in 19'41. In 1943 h,e was granted a leave of absence from Iyf.I.T, to serve as Scientific Director of the Sugar Research Foundation, Inc., which position he occupied until 1952. He has also been Visiting P'rofessor at the Uiniversities. of Illinois and North C'arolina. -From~ 1952until 1954 he served as a consultantto industrial firms on problems rel&t1ng to foods, nutrition,, pharmaceuticals, fermentations and sponsored research. In 1954 he joined the present Council for Tobacco R'esearch"s predecessor organizaltion - the Tobacco Industry Research Committeee as an Associate Scientific director. Dr.-Hockett is a Fellow of the American Academy of' Arts and Sciences, the New York Academy of Sciences„ the American Public Health Association, the Royal Society of'Arts, and the American Institute of' Chemists. He holds membership in the American Chemicall Society, in which he has served as an Alternate Councilor,, member of the Aomer.- claituse Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry in 1944, Chairman in 1945 ' and 1946,, and Secretary-T'reasurer from 1956 to 1960'. He also holds membership in the American Sbcietr of Biological C:hemists,, American Association for the advancement of S:cience,, F'riends of the World Health Organization, R'oy al Society of Health,, and the Phi Beta Kappa, Associates. He has served as a Lecturer in Switzerland for the American- Swiss Foundation for Scientific Exchiange, member of the Food Indus~tr,ies" 03f 1350!9
