Anti-smoking code adopted
Westchester's Board of Health Thursday
adopted a countywide anti-smoking code that has
been in the works for more than a year and a half. ,
`" if
Smoking - Clean Indoor Air
The act,_which '
becomes effective Nov. 1, bans smoking in all pub-
lic places except in designated areas.
~ Restaurants are among the establishments ex-
cluded from the code.
.6 Specifically, smoking will be banned In retaii
stores, public conveyances (airplanes, trains,
buses, boats, and taxis), educational facilities,
health care facilities, auditoriums, theaters, li-
braries, museums, arenas, meeting rooms, rest
rooms, elevators and public offices emptoying 10
or more persons. ; ~ :
While the ban prohibits smoking In supermar-
kets, grocery stores, delicatessens and all stores
where food is sold, it excludes restaurants.
Earlier versions of the code banned smoking in
all eating establishments, but an economic hard-
ship plea from restaurateurs led to the restaurant
exemption.
Infractions of the code will be heard by hearing
officers and will be punishable by fines of up to
$2501evied by the board of health.
