TITLE vs. Decade on # 5542/577 - Research Design (N, Cetls, Glegibility, Design, Key Banner Breaks, Alethodology, Citios) A total of 250 random smokers will be personally interviewed in the Roosevelt Field Shopping Center in L.I. for the purpose of comparing the taste of True 5 mg. to the taste of Decade cigarettes. The research will be fielded during the period of March 28 - April 1, 1977. All "qualified" participants will be 21 years of age or older and will be smokers of at least ~ pack of cigarettes/day. Additionally, no regular smokers of True, Decade or any non-filter cigarette will be eligible. Each of the 250 respondents will-be given True & Decade to smoke; in either a menthol or a non-menthol version (depending on the respondents' regular "type" of cigarette). The res- pondents will be blindfolded -- they will not be aware of which cigarettes they are testing. To avoid any position bias, True will be offered to the respondents half the time as the first cigarette tried and half the time as the second cigarette tried. An attempt will be made to have an approximately equal number of males and females participa- ting in the study; and approximately equal "Menthol & Non-Menthol" completed interviews. Key Criteria For Analysis This research has been designed to ascertain whether or not True cigarettes have a signifi- mtly higher level of taste perception than the recently introduced ultra-fi cigarette "Decade". Research Limitations As was the case in the recently conducted True/Now/Carlton taste testing, a sample of this magnitude should never be viewed as representative of nationwide perceptions of the brands being evaluated.
